Hello, America #5

Quote #1:

"The word camp sends a shiver down my spine" -Elli, page 184
Significance:
This was the part where the Principal was telling Elli about the camp that she could work at during the summer.  When I read this sentence I thought that it was really sad because even though she survived the Holocaust and it is over now, she still has to live with the memories forever.
Character Judgement- Principal:
I think that the principal guy shouldn't be so hard on Elli, I'm sure that he can't even imagine everything that she has been through in her past.  I feel bad for Elli because a lot of people are  giving her a hard time because she was a Holocaust survivor and that's supposed to be a good thing.
Question:
If you were Elli would you go to camp?
Quote #2:
"The next morning the harsh reality of the tight daily schedule hits me like an ice cold shower" -Elli, page 190
Significance:
When Elli said this she was referring to her first day of summer camp and how hard it was.  The main reason why I choose this quote was because I liked the way the author used a metaphor to describe how Elli's first day of camp was.  This sentence was important because Elli said that her first day of camp was like immigrating all over again.  She had to start off somewhere new where she did not know anyone at all and she did not feel welcomed.
Personal Connection:
Sometimes when I go somewhere completely new where everyone already knows each other and I don't know anyone I don't feel welcomed, just like Elli.
Question:
Do you think that Elli would have a better summer in New York with her family or at camp?

Quote #1: Yeah I also picked a quote that had to do with her going to camp. I thought it was sad that she was so effected by the concentration camps that she was scared at first of a summer camp. Now though that she knows better she's not so afraid.

Question #1: I think if I were Elli would go to camp so that I could become friends with more people my own age.

Quote #2: I though it was interesting that the schedule was hard on Elli because you would think that it would be easier than the concentration camps. She might have got unused to it from having a new life in America but it just shows how well she's adjusting.

Question #2: I think Elli would have had a better summer with her family because she would have gotten to explore more. But because she's at camp she can probably get more experience connecting with people her own age who are counselors.

Quote #1: I picked a quote that had her at camp. I guess that is three people so far who have written about it so it must be a very popular thing to quote her on. I liked how she was scared of summer camps because of her experience in the concentration camps.

Question #1: I think that I would go to camp if I was Elli to make new friends and also to try and get over the concentration camps.

Quote #2: I thought that it was cool how the author described the schedule in such detail. I thought that the concentration camps would have had a lot tighter schedule. Maybe they did, but she is just trying to forget about them.

Question #2: I think that their are good reasons for both spending time with her family and being at summer camp. With her family, she could go out and explore New York more, but at camp she gets to hang around with a lot of people her own age.

I like this quote because it shows shes afraid to go to camp because of the other "fun" but not really concentration camp she has been to.

    Question #1
I would also go to camp if I was Elli, just to meet new people my age, and maybe it would help me out in the real world.

    Quote #2
I think that this quote is very important because of, like how you stated it was like immigration all over again for Elli, and she was not ready for that, and did not want to go through with it.

    Question #2
I would have to say with her family in New York, because they are family so she would feel a lot more comfortable around them, then she would at summer camp where she feels not welcome.
